Travelers
Overview
Major US admitted-market carrier writing both personal and commercial lines. Appears in this wiki through jim-coronado’s walkthrough of a real SMB commercial placement, where it is both the carrier that took a hard risk and the illustration of how appetite decisions actually get made — by phone, through a marketing rep, before any quoting happens.
Relationships
- jim-coronado — the producer who placed the condo-association risk with Travelers.
- Named alongside Safeco, Grange, Guard, and Hartford as the admitted carriers the agency works with.
Notes
- The escalation path: broker → marketing rep (the carrier’s agency-facing representative, and the first call whenever there’s an appetite question) → underwriter (introduced by the rep) → quote directly on the carrier portal. This human channel is what let a technically-declinable risk get placed.
- The risk: a 3-unit condo association whose prior broker failed to procure the master policy for a full year. Admitted carriers typically require ≥6 months continuous coverage; the rep cleared it anyway because the building was only 2–3 years old, and confirmed a 1920s-era building would not have been touched at all. No lapse surcharge was applied.
- Jim volunteered that Travelers had recently rebuilt its portal and that the new one is markedly more usable — “Travelers has never been one to be simple” — a small but real datapoint on carrier portal quality varying enormously and changing over time.
- Commercial access requires a separate contract from personal lines even at the same carrier; guidelines differ and availability depends on whether the carrier is in retention or growth mode.
